Rio Rancho to Receive Stimulus Funding for Paseo del Volcan
RIO RANCHO, NM - On Thursday, the Mid-Region Council of Government's (MRCOG) Metropolitan Transportation Board approved the city of Rio Rancho receiving $14 million of federal stimulus package funding to be used for the extension of Paseo del Volcan.
This money will be available to the city once the state of New Mexico and MRCOG receives the allotment of federal stimulus package funding. The city anticipates construction of Paseo del Volcan to start this August. "A team effort consisting of city and state officials was the driving force behind Rio Rancho receiving stimulus funding for Paseo del Volcan," Mayor of Rio Rancho Tom Swisstack said. "In particular I want to thank Governor Bill Richardson, District Three Transportation Commissioner Norman Assed, and former Rio Rancho Mayor Pat D'Arco. By receiving this money, we can now address more community road needs faster."
The most recent cost estimates for the extension of Paseo del Volcan from Iris Road to U.S. 550 is approximately $28 million. The city will add the $14 million in federal stimulus funding to more than $14 million previously received from a grant awarded by the New Mexico Department of Transportation to complete the Paseo del Volcan extension.
The city had planned on using $10 million of a proposed $25 million road improvement bond for Paseo del Volcan. If voters approve the road bond on Tuesday, March 10, the city will use previously earmarked funding for Paseo del Volcan on other community road needs.
The extension of Paseo del Volcan is a priority for the city because it will create new access to Rio Rancho's City Center. The City Center area is home to Rio Rancho City Hall, the Santa Ana Star Center, and forthcoming projects which include: Cleveland High School (opening August of 2009); Hewlett-Packard Customer Service and Technical Support Center (opening late 2009); University of New Mexico West campus (opening spring 2010); Central New Mexico Community College campus (opening spring 2010); the University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center (opening 2011); and future economic development projects.

The Metropolitan Transportation Board sets policy for transportation issues in the Albuquerque urban area. Elected officials from the different jurisdictions sit together on this Board. The Board coordinates local government transportation planning and project development; identifies federal funding for transportation projects; including roadway widening and extensions; sets policy for roadway access; identifies corridors and alignments for new roadways; identifies bicycle facilities and federal funding for them; and makes decisions about long-range issues such as light rail proposals.
